
Hyundai, in particular, has capitalized on the positive momentum it generated from winning 2009 Car of the Year at the Detroit auto show for its Genesis sedan. It debuted the Nuvis hybrid concept--with gull-wing doors, no less--at today's press conference and prominently displayed its 2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe, the two-door version of its first foray into the luxury sector.
The $96,000 2010 Hyundai Equus, though not likely to appear in the U.S. anytime soon, is another step into luxury for the South Korea-based company. Essentially a longer version of the Genesis, the sedan is rumored to pack 420 horsepower and is Hyundai's most expensive and plush vehicle to date.
World car of the year winners were also announced Thursday morning, with the Volkswagen Golf MK VI taking top honors. A panel of 59 international jurors chose the gutsy Golf as the best overall car of 2010; it beat out the Ford Fiesta and Scion iQ (a future competitor to Smart). In other categories, the Nissan GT-R won the title of best performance car and the Fiat 500 won for best design. The hydrogen fuel-cell-powered Honda FCX Clarity earned the best green car of the year distinction.
